This report argues that Townsville has strong momentum towards achieving its vision of a future water sensitive city. However, strategic attention is needed to overcome the social and institutional barriers that could impede further on-ground progress.
Problem: Roofs receive the most intense solar heat load among all building envelope surfaces in Equatorial-region. Solar heat gain through roof contributes to a significant portion of building heat load. In tropics where building cooling is needed all-year-round, passive methods to reduce heat gain through roof could provide significant cooling energy-savings.
Rainfall is seldom addressed in the analysis of climates for building design, usually neglected for building thermal performance calculations, and there is very little research about its potential cooling effect.
