Australia leads the world with rapid small-scale adoption of solar photovoltaic (PV) encouraged by feed-in-tariffs (FiTs) and rebates. The common business model for small-scale solar PV is designed around individual installation ownership requiring an upfront capital cost from the dwelling owner and rooftop capacity. These conditions are prohibitive for low-income households and renters.

Effective January 1, 2017, San Francisco became the first U.S. city to mandate solar and living roofs on most new construction. With the passage of this legislation, between 15% and 30% of roof space on most new construction projects will incorporate solar, living roofs, or a combination of both.

The Building Sustainability Index (BASIX) assessment tool estimates the operational energy consumption and GHG emissions from new residential developments based on information available at the building design stage. However, post-occupancy energy consumption can be different from the estimated figures at the design stage.

It is critical that any development of a tool be properly evaluated by state-of-the-art evaluation techniques.

There are a number of factors accelerating the uptake of residential battery systems in Australia, these include: falling battery cost, increased energy prices and lower solar export rates. Given the new interest, it is important to analyse the optimal capacities of residential battery systems, for a standard Australian households.
