This study examines patterns of electricity use by Sydney households who have installed solar PV technology compared to those who have not in order to identify whether conservation or rebound effects are associated with domestic photovoltaics. A rebound effect exists when expected energy (and carbon) savings stimulate greater energy use.

Most energy efficiency programs target only one fuel, usually electricity or natural gas. While they achieve savings, they sometimes miss opportunities by failing to address other fuels. Dual-fuel programs, on the other hand, have the potential to save more energy, reduce program costs, and improve customer satisfaction. Yet many utilities still do not offer them because they often require collaboration with other utilities or program administrators, making them more difficult to run.

Urban areas are responsible for 70% of global CO2 emissions and the rapid growth in urbanisation presents a significant risk to cities. It is predicted that by 2030 more than 70% of the South African population will be living in cities. The decarbonisation of urban systems, especially building and energy infrastructures are therefore strategically important in mitigating climate change.

Part I introduced the growing role of prosumers, discussed the context of the human relationship with food and demonstrated how citizens’ choices and actions regarding food consumption and production in urban settings are shaped by the economic, cultural and infrastructure systems in which they live.

The relationship between levels of energy efficiency and differing forms of commercial office workspace tenure is theoretically affected by the economic principal-agent problems of moral hazard and adverse selection. Tenure involving contracts gross with energy utilities is subject to the moral hazard of overconsumption of energy which results in lower measures of energy efficiency. Tenure involving contracts net of energy utilities is subject to underinvestment in energy efficiency leading to the adverse selection of buildings put to market.

The shade effect of a rooftop photovoltaic (PV) collector on a roof is usually ignored in building energy simulation in Transient System Simulation (TRNSYS) software. This disregard is due to either the unavailability of a suitable shading component in the simulation software or to an assumption that the shade on opaque surfaces, such as roofs, has small impact on the indoor temperature and the subsequent heating and cooling energy usage. However, for a relatively large collector area, ignoring the collector shadow on the roof may produce inaccurate results.

Applying behaviour change methods to reduce home energy consumption has resulted in varying outcomes and also conservation effects that were short-lived. Some of the more promising treatments included In Home Energy Displays (IHDs) and home energy bills with comparisons to unknown others - for individual homes. In contrast, so-called collective “energy communities” reduce individual energy consumption and report other benefits such as group cohesion and community building.
